Organic Alfalfa

High-Protein Perennial for Long-Term Wildlife Nutrition

Our certified Organic Alfalfa is a premium perennial legume designed to deliver exceptional protein and long-lasting forage production. Known for its deep root system and drought tolerance, alfalfa provides consistent nutrition that supports antler development, lactation, and overall herd health year after year.

When properly established and managed, alfalfa creates a dependable food source that withstands grazing pressure while improving soil structure and naturally fixing nitrogen for future crops.

Build lasting nutrition. Strengthen your soil. Plant with confidence.

Benefits for Wildlife

  • High-protein forage ideal for antler growth and fawn development
  • Deep root system improves drought tolerance and nutrient uptake
  • Perennial stand provides multi-year food plot performance
  • Excellent regrowth after grazing or mowing
  • Fixes nitrogen to improve overall soil fertility

Planting Guidelines

  • Seeding Rate: 15–20 lb per acre
  • Planting Depth: ¼ inch (do not plant deeper)
  • Best Planting Windows:
    • Early spring (after soil temps reach 50°F+)
    • Late summer (6–8 weeks before first frost)
  • Site Prep:
    • Plant into a clean, firm, weed-free seedbed
    • Ensure excellent seed-to-soil contact

Soil & Maintenance Tips

  • Conduct a soil test prior to planting—alfalfa prefers pH 6.5–7.0
  • Apply phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) according to soil test recommendations
  • Avoid excessive nitrogen applications
  • Mow periodically to control weeds and encourage healthy regrowth

Frequently Asked Questions

Is your organic seed certified?

Yes. Our organic seed and mixes are certified by MOSA Certified Organic.

Will this come back next year?

Yes. Organic alfalfa is a perennial forage and can last for multiple years with proper management.

What is organic alfalfa used for?

Organic alfalfa is a high-protein, nutrient-rich perennial legume that provides long-term forage, attracts deer and other wildlife, and improves soil health through nitrogen fixation.

When should I plant organic alfalfa?

Plant in spring after the last frost or in late summer/early fall at least 6 weeks before your first expected frost to allow seedlings to establish.

How much seed do I need per acre?

For drilled planting, use approximately 12–15 lb per acre. If broadcasting, use 18–20 lb per acre and cultipack to ensure good seed-to-soil contact.

How deep should I plant the seed?

Plant alfalfa seed shallow at approximately 1/4" to 1/2" deep. Proper depth is critical for even germination and strong establishment.

Does organic alfalfa require fertilizer?

Conduct a soil test before planting. Alfalfa requires proper pH (ideally 6.5–7.0) and adequate phosphorus and potassium levels for long-term productivity.

What wildlife will this attract?

Alfalfa is highly attractive to deer and other game species due to its consistent high protein content and season-long forage production.
